David McBeth Sutherland (1883-1973) RSA
Born in Wick, David Macbeth Sutherland (1883-1973) (universally known as D M) studied art in Edinburgh at the beginning of the 20th century. He taught at Edinburgh College of Art from 1913 to 1933 (with a break for military service in the First World War) and then at Gray's School of Art in Aberdeen until 1948. D M Sutherland belonged to a group of Edinburgh artists who were exposed to Impressionism and Post-Impressionism in their early years, and this influenced his work for the rest of his life.
