James W Ferguson (1916-1963)
Little is known about Ferguson, yet his works often appear on the art market - almost exclusively landscape views around south west Scotland. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Glasgow Institute of Art, of which which he was a member, and he lived for many years in Glasgow. This is an unusual portrait of an aging S J Peploe, whether taken from life or a tribute to one of the painting giants of the Scottish art scene of the day is open to speculation.
