''These pictures have grown out of observations and thoughts on situations that I have noticed. For instance, in Awell brought up young lady, a young girl is being courted by a clearly unsuitable fellow. I don’t set up an easel and paint them on the spot, but take away the memory of the exchange and try to recreate it from both the girl’s and the man’s point of view. I attempt to make a picture that is a meditation on the situation. Each feels awkward and uncomfortable, but in different ways: the man sprawls in exaggerated casualness and the girl stiffens as she acknowledges her discomfort and also the unspoken superi ority that she feels. All of these thoughts and the
references to the rather exalted surround ings go into making this painting. It becomes a narrative as well as a visual composition.''
