Whilst Noel Streatfeild was preparing her novel Circus Shoes (The Circus is Coming) her publishers arranged for her and Spurrier to accompany Bertram Mill’s Circus. Although illness prevented him from finishing the drawings, his original sketches were used to illustrate the book on its publication in 1938.
