Charles Simpson - ‘Islands and Borders’
Exhibition E-Catalogue
Charles Simpson is one of the most important landscape painters working in Scotland today. His distinctive style of thickly applied oil paint executed in robust broad strokes has clear precedents in the Glasgow School of a century ago. These post impressionist roots are tempered by Charles’ instinctive sense of light and colour that imbues all of his paintings with a very contemporary freshness and luminosity.
In this latest collection of paintings Charles returns to his greatest inspiration, the breathtaking and varied landscape of his native Scotland. The natural beauty of the fields and woodland around his Borders home has proved a driving force for Charles; an urgent need to capture in paint his own very personal response to these familiar contours as they change with the seasons.
Charles Simpson was born in 1952 and trained at Glasgow School of Art. He now lives and paints in the Scottish Borders. He is a past winner of the Chairman's Purchase Prize at the Discerning Eye.
