Exhibitions tend to emphasise the ﬁnished works, for fairly obvious reasons. But for the painter, it is process as much as completion that intrigues and stimulates. On a recent painting trip I ofen heard the comment, as I worked at my easel, ‘this is modern art’. It’s amusing to think my work could be seen that way at all, but perhaps what these well-meaning observers were noticing was the very abstract nature of the early stages of a painting. It begins with two marks to denote a spatial relationship, and as more reference points join in, a more complex set of information gradually emerges. I use a lot of painstaking measuring, accompanied by a fair amount of anguished facial expression. Soon I start adding simple tonal values, from dark to light: again it is all about relative tones helping to convey depth. It is a deeply engaging process, and it is always diﬃcult to know when the relationships are working well enough together to have produced a satisfying statement about what is in front of me. In short, when to stop.

This is an exhibition full of subjects I love to paint, and I hope it will communicate the happiness I feel with paintbrushes in my hand. But it is also another staging post on the road to, well... somewhere, I hope. It is a strange journey that takes one round and round in the same places, but I do feel I am travelling nonetheless. In all my pictures I try to bring a sensitive, painterly language to a disciplined, objective analysis of the subject matter. I do not know or care much whether it is revealing of any deeper truth: for me it is quite all right to be forever skimming the surface–as in catalogue number 40–so long as the surface is beautiful and worthy of contemplation.
